Zinc Sulphate




Zinc is one of the essential micronutrients and an important constituent of several enzymes and proteins. Though, it is only needed by plants in small quantities, it is crucial to plant development, as it plays a significant part in a wide range of processes.

  • Zinc is vital for photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism.
  • Zinc Deficiency affects flowering and fruit development by prolonging the vegetative period and delaying maturity in lower yield with poor quality produce.
  • Zinc is very essential for both plants & human being’s growth & development.

  • Appears after one month of sowing.
  • Light green, yellow to bleached spots between the veins of older leaves.
  • The emerging leaves become smaller in size.
  • Internodal distance becomes short in case of severe deficiency.
  • Deficiency symptoms are prominent in Maize and Sugarcane that can be seen as yellow striping of leaves which becomes white in case of acute whereas Rice leaves becomes rusty.
  • Cotton leaves also show bronzing of leaves whereas Soybean plants are stunted with light green-yellow leaves.

  1. Basal Dosage (Based on soil test): Zinc Sulphate (33%) can be applied as basal dose during sowing time along with N, P, K fertiliser and compost for best results as per soil test. A blanket dose of 5-6 kg/acre can be applied if no soil testing is done.
  2. Split applications: In case of rice crop, 50% zinc sulphate can be given as basal dose and remaining 50% in 1-3 splits up to tillering stage or 45 days after planting through 0.5% Zinc Sulphate solution foliar sprays at weekly intervals.
  3. Seed Treatment: Zinc can also be supplied through seed treatment especially in cereals and pulses. Solution of 50 gm Zinc Sulphate per Kg. of seed may be prepared in about 1 to 2 litres of water depending upon the type of seed. Seed may be treated, dried in shade and sown immediately. There should be enough moisture in the field while sowing. This is a good practice in times of shortage or low availability of Zinc Sulphate.
  4. Sugarcane Sets & Potato Tuber Treatment : Prepare a solution of 50 gm. Zinc sulphate (33%) in 100 litre of water & soak the sugarcane setts / potato seed tubers for 24 hours and dry in shade. Irrigation should be given after 4-5 days of planting the crop. Sett Tuber treatment gives better yields compared to soil application which is slightly better over foliar spray
  5. Foliar Spray : When Zinc deficiency is noticed, immediately spray Zinc Sulphate solution of 1/2-1 kg Zinc Sulphate mixed with 1 kg. Lime prepared in 200 litre of water per acre. Repeat again after 10 days intervals if deficiency persists. Under these situations, foliar spray is the best method.

A blankets dose of 10 kg/acre can be applied if no soil testing is done. Basal dose application is more effective.
  2. Foliar Spray : When Zinc deficiency is noticed, immediately spray Zinc Sulphate solution of 2 kg Zinc Sulphate and 1 kg. Lime prepared in 200 litre of water per acre. Repeat again after 10 days intervals if deficiency persists.
